Pet Travel Regulations USDA: What You Need to Know

Navigating pet travel regulations from the USDA is a critical step when preparing your pet for domestic or international travel. Noah’s Pet Transport by The ARK at JFK specializes in helping pet owners meet USDA pet travel requirements, ensuring every document, vaccine, and travel certificate is handled properly to guarantee a safe and compliant journey.

Whether your pet is traveling across the country or around the world, understanding the USDA’s role in pet travel compliance is essential — and we’re here to make it simple.

Understanding USDA Pet Travel Requirements

The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) oversees pet exports from the United States. Pets traveling internationally must meet strict USDA pet travel requirements to avoid delays, quarantine, or denial of entry at their destination.

Key USDA Pet Travel Steps:

  • Microchipping: Required for many international destinations.

  • Vaccinations: Up-to-date vaccinations, including rabies, with specific waiting periods.

  • USDA APHIS Pet Certificate: An accredited veterinarian must complete a health certificate, endorsed by USDA.

  • Blood Tests and Treatments: Some countries require rabies titer tests, parasite treatments, and more.

  • Import Permits: Certain countries require official import permits before arrival.

Each country has its own regulations, and missing even one requirement can result in travel delays or pet quarantine.

USDA APHIS Pet Certificate: Essential for International Travel

The USDA APHIS pet certificate is a government-endorsed document confirming your pet’s health and travel readiness. It must be completed by a USDA-accredited veterinarian and endorsed by an official USDA APHIS office.

Common Requirements for Certification:

  • Current rabies vaccination

  • General wellness exam within 10 days of travel

  • Species-specific health tests

  • Accurate microchip information

  • Destination-specific treatments or vaccines

Noah’s Pet Transport partners with accredited veterinarians to facilitate quick, correct preparation of the necessary USDA travel documents.

USDA Animal Export Regulations for Pets

Understanding USDA animal export regulations is critical when shipping pets abroad. Some countries have highly detailed entry protocols, including:

  • Advanced notice of arrival

  • Special rabies certifications

  • Quarantine reservations

  • Blood titer test timing

Failure to meet USDA and foreign requirements can result in pets being returned to the U.S. or placed in extended quarantine overseas. Noah’s Pet Transport ensures you are fully informed and compliant well ahead of departure.

Popular pet export destinations we handle:

  • United Kingdom (DEFRA compliance)

  • Australia (DAFF regulations with mandatory quarantine)
